ATV Rider Bryan Hulsey Interview

I recently caught up with ATV Racer, and ODI Sponsored Rider, Bryan Hulsey, who just wrapped up the championship in the 2008 OMA ATV Pro Nationals. It’s no surprise to us what this guy can do on an ATV, we already knew he was bad fast!

ODI: So what series do you race in?

BH: I am Racing the OMA ATV National Series.

ODI: How did you get involved in that?

BH: I used to race the GNCC Series and in 2007 I stayed home to race the Missouri Harescrambles Series. I won that series in 2007 and Some friends of mine wanted to race the OMA ATV National series because it is more centralized in the Mid-West, therefore it would be less expensive to race this series and still run a National Series. So we all loaded up and hit the OMA ATV Nationals.

ODI: So, you've raced a lot of different places I'm sure. What's your favorite place and what's your favorite type of riding?

BH: I have a couple of favorite tracks. I always loved the rough sandy tracks at the Florida rounds of the openers of the GNCCs. Also in Missouri, we have a local XC track in Kahoka MO. If it is not too muddy, I always have loved that place. When it rains a lot there it is horrible. The Messick, MI (round 6) track was my favorite OMA National track this past year.

ODI: Out here in California, there aren't a lot of guys racing quads, but mostly taking them out to the dunes in Glamis and Dumont. When you’re not racing, do you ever go out and free ride the local mountains?

BH: I don’t do a lot of just free riding. Most of my play riding is a day of practicing with my racing friends and we hit it pretty hard.

ODI: How long have you been racing?

BH: I have been racing ATVs since I was 19 and I am 37 now. I have raced local XC Racing, local MX Racing, Mid-South HareScrambles Series, GNCC and now the new Missouri ATV OXC (Ozark Cross Country) Series and this year the OMA ATV National Series.

ODI: I got the chance to meet Malcolm Smith the other day, that guy is STILL riding. He takes tour groups down to Mexico. You know, 37 is not that old, you don't plan on stopping anytime soon, do you?

BH: I have always figured as long as I am competitive, I will be racing. I am trying to stay as competitive as possible with working out and training, therefore I can race longer. It does take more work these days to maintain the same level that I used to.

Of course, why don't you tell us what grips you like to ride?

BH: I use the ODI Lock-On X-Treme ATV Grips. This winter I will give the Lock-On Rogue grips a try. I love never having to worry about wire tieing grips on again or having them come loose. Also, I dont have to fight taking the old glue off of the handlebars anymore. ODI Grips are not only the most secure grips ever, they also save time in the garage!!!!

ODI: (and that's why we love this guy!) Just one last question, What are your plans and goals heading into the 2009 season?

BH: For 2009 I will be a part of a Duncan Racing International team for the OMA ATV Nationals again. Myself and fellow Duncan Racing sponsored rider John Pitts will be team mates under the same tent. We hope to finish #1 & #2 next year.

My goal is to repeat as OMA ATV National Champion and I will also be racing all of the local Missouri OXC races that do not conflict.

ODI Would like to thank you for all your respresentation this year at each of your races. Keep on rippin it hard and bring home those Championships. Good luck in 2009 and I hope we’ll be doing another post championship interview next year!
